Cyber Patriot Results
Congratulations for all of the hard work the students have done this year. Unfortunately, neither team advanced to the national semi-finals this year. A big thanks goes to Jim Schatzman from Northrup Grumann and Chris Retford from Summit 54 and Buckley for being our mentors this year. Their knowledge and talents went a long way to support the kids and help them learn the growing field of cyber security.

Off-Season Conditioning - Baseball
Sunday, 10 July 2011 19:05
It is important for athletes to continue his training throughout the year. Off-season conditioning is more important now than ever. A student is encouraged to play other sports but it is also important for them to continue baseball specific workouts to prepare them for the spring season. I am an advocate of 4 basic training items to work on during the off season. Agility, throwing, catching, forearm strength, and tee work for hitting. All can be done for a very modest investment. Below are a couple of web sites that have the items needed and can come in various price ranges. Almost everything can be assembled for under $20 or over a couple of hundred depending on your needs.
Speed and agility are critical and the ability to move side to side and have a strong awareness of the body and what your body can do is critical. I recommend an agility ladder. It is found on the SKILZ web site but can be created with twine and dowels or rulers separated about 15 inches apart. Forearm work is critical and can be the difference on throwing a runner out at first or short hopping the ball in the dirt. I have a link to an exercise that can be created with a five pound weight and a broomstick and rope. You can also buy fancy machines but the work is the same.
A pitch back net is important and a baseball player should throw and catch the ball every day of the year. It can be as fancy as going out with others and playing or bouncing a tennis ball off the inside of a garage wall and catching it over and over. I cannot stress this activity enough. The glove and the ability to handle a ball should be so second nature that a player can do it in his sleep. Handling a ball and a glove every day is the single biggest difference between champions and those that are in the middle of the league standings.
A tee is something a player should work on at least three to four times a week in the off-season. It cannot be stressed enough of how important good swing mechanics are to moving to higher levels.
